My new Amiga A600GS Arrives from AmigaKit

My new Amiga A600GS from AmigaKit finally arrived! I have been looking forward to this for quite some time now. I'm unsure as to why it took so long to arrive, but alias! It has arrived. 

It was pretty simple to setup. Connected the included mouse and gamepad along with a keyboard and Cat-6 network cable, and off to the "races" I went.
Here I'm playing Super Skidmarks. 

Being the typical user that I am, rather than using the well-written manual, I started off just jumping in and trying to figure things out. 


I tried out FinalWriter 7 and found that it worked well and even saves my document (previous demo version of of the upcoming Final Writer on Aros didn't allow to save documents). Unfortunately, I did discover that Final Writer does not include a spell checker! This is quite an interesting exclusion from a word processing program. As yet I could not find how to upgrade or acquire the spell checker feature of Final Writer 7.
 

The one missing application is OWB or some type of web browser. I'll try figuring out how to get on downloaded and installed. I also didn't find any development software such as an editor or compiler, so I'll have to search for that as well.

AmigaOS 4.1 FE PPC Classic on WinUAE

So I have been using AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Classic on WinUAE for a few months now. Here are some of my observations. Before I continue I must say again that this review is based on an emulated AmigaOS PPC Classic, so I do not know if my troubles discussed below are the result of emulation or of the OS. I enjoy working in OS4.1 but I tend to encounter problems that I had on my stock A1200 under OS 3.0: crashes. In OS4.1 I still experience frequent system crashes. The GrimReaper app does catch some programs before the program takes down the system, but it doesn't catch everything. I also seem to run out of memory often. This is particularly true with CodeBench, which is what I use to test-drive some C/C++ programming on OS4.1. Web browsing is a bit frustrating. I've tried OWB, Odyssey, IBrowse, and NetSurf. NetSurf seems to be the better browser for my tasks. One would think Amiga websites would work okay with AOS browsers, but that isn't the case. The ...

AmigaOS Aros clone on Icaros Desktop version 2.2.5

 Icaros Desktop New Install I had some extra time recently, so I decided to try out the Icaros Desktop  2.2.5, which was released in December 2018. Icaros Desktop is an AmigaOS clone that runs on x86 hardware. Icaros is based upon Aros. Aros in an operating system that can be installed on an x86 computer and it requires no host operating system to run. Most AmigaOS emulators require a host operating system such as Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux. Aros, however, eliminates the need for a host OS.  OWB web browser running on Icaros Desktop It took maybe 10-15 minutes to install Icaros into a Virtual Machine (Oracle VM Virtual Box, to be precise).
